State Depository of Valuables known as Gohran has a special department called Diamond Fund. This institute buys diamonds at fixed prices to sell them to Russian diamond-cutting factories at public auctions. The best and most precious metals and stones are kept here.
Working in Gokhran today are Viktor Nikolayev, Vladimir Sitnikov, Boris Ivanov and Gennady Aleksakhin whose names are known to jewellers throughout the world. They created marvellous piece of modern jewellery from platinum and the best diamonds mined in Russia. In the interviews recorded some of the masters are speaking about antique restoration and the reasons of work for the State diamond cutting factory.
The most precious pieces come from Imperial Russia. It was transferred to the treasury Fund in Moscow after the revolution. This collection is displayed to the public in Kremlin. It contains a world-famous collection of precious stones, masterpieces of 18th- and 19th-century jewellery and platinum and gold nuggets. The nucleus of the collection consists of pieces of jewellery made for the royal court and the Imperial regalia, which were regarded as the property of the Crown, hence the term "crown valuables". Peter the Great placed the crown valuables in the safekeeping of the state following a decree in 1719, which declared the regalia to be the pride and glory of Russia.
There are ecclesiastical objects, jewellery, paintings and costumes from the 300 years of the Romanov Dynasty who ruled Russia from 1613 until 1917. Experts will tell unbelievable stories of some of the precious pieces.
